Big Horn Federal announces sale of Ram’s Head Insurance

Greybull, Wyoming - Big Horn Federal Savings Bank has announced the sale of its wholly owned subsidiary, Ram's Head Insurance, to TC Insurance Group LLC, a subsidiary of Cowboy State Financial LLC of Powell.

The transaction, which closed June 1, 2026, includes only the insurance book of business. Big Horn Federal retains ownership of the Ram’s Head Financial Services building at 527 Greybull Ave. and plans to continue utilizing the facility for bank operations.

Cowboy State Financial will continue operating offices in both Greybull and Lovell. The Greybull office will be located at 346 Greybull Ave., while the Lovell office will operate from 226 E. Main Street.

Big Horn Federal Chairman, CEO and President John Coyne III said the opportunity represented a natural fit for both organizations and the communities they serve.

“This transaction was not something we were actively seeking, but when the opportunity was presented, it immediately felt like the perfect fit,” Coyne said. “Our longstanding relationship with the proprietors of Cowboy State Financial gave us confidence that they could provide the focus and expertise needed to continue serving the greater Big Horn Basin while maintaining the same commitment to caring for the people and communities we've proudly served for decades.”

Ram's Head Insurance was established in the spring of 1988 following Big Horn Federal’s acquisition of First Greybull Insurance from Charlene Collingwood.

Sherri Wilkinson, who is the acting manager of Ram's Head Insurance and been with the business for the past 38 years, will remain with the agency and continue serving customers across the region.

“The name’s changing, but the agents and the work we have done are staying the same,” Wilkinson said.

Coyne said the transaction will allow both organizations to sharpen their focus while significantly expanding insurance offerings available to customers. It is for these reasons that the ultimate sale was strategically correct for all the constituents involved.

“As the bank approaches $400 million in assets, balancing the demands of both banking and insurance operations no longer allowed us to provide the level of dedicated insurance focus we want for our customers,” Coyne said. “Partnering with Cowboy State Financial brings a full-time, insurance-first commitment to the agency business, and we believe that raises the level of service and opportunity for everyone involved.”

Trevor Nelson and Craig Kenyon, owners of TC Insurance Group, said they are excited to build upon the strong community relationships Ram's Head Insurance has established over the years.

“Ram’s Head Insurance has a long history of being actively involved in the communities it serves, and that was one of the things that initially attracted us to the agency,” Nelson said. “The more conversations we had with John and the Ram’s Head team, the more we realized this was a natural fit for both organizations.” Nelson said “The merger will provide customers with access to a broader range of insurance products and carriers, including expanded life insurance offerings as well as additional commercial, farm and ranch insurance options.”

“We are excited about what the future holds and look forward to continuing the trusted relationships Ram's Head customers have come to expect,” said Kenyon.

Although the announcement is new, this has been in the works for some time with the employees who are transitioning being involving in the process. Coyne conveyed that both organizations have been working closely to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible for customers and the bank’s own employees who will always be part of the Big Horn Federal family. Trevor concurred, adding that while some changes will undoubtable occur - including office locations and temporary adjustments to operating hours at the Lovell office - company leaders have continually worked toward making sure that every decision throughout the process has been made with the best interests of Ram’s Head employees and customers in mind.
